People Behind Hombevu
Founder & Secretary : Shylaja [ Visionary | Environmental | Advocate ]
Shylaja is a dedicated environmental activist based in Bengaluru, with over 15 years of hands-on involvement in nature conservation and environmental awareness. Her work focuses on the protection and nurturing of roadside plants and trees, an often-overlooked aspect of urban environmental care, especially in metropolitan areas.
Inspired by the spirit of grassroots conservation exemplified by figures like Saalumarada Thimmakka, Shylaja has consistently taken personal responsibility for watering, protecting, and sustaining roadside greenery. Alongside this, she actively promotes sustainable living practices, including awareness against single-use plastics and environmentally harmful disposable products.
Her innovative initiatives, such as community-driven alternatives to plastic-based disposables, have helped raise public consciousness about waste reduction and responsible consumption. Shylaja’s environmental efforts have been widely recognized through newspaper articles, television features, and radio interviews, highlighting her role as a committed voice for urban environmental protection.

Dr. Swati Anand is a committed environmental advocate and education professional with a strong academic background in Biotechnology. She holds degrees in B.Sc., M.Sc., and M.B.Tech in Biotechnology, along with a Ph.D., reflecting her deep engagement with science, research, and education.
Her concern for the environment extends beyond academic interest into everyday practice. Dr. Swati actively nurtures a wide variety of plants at her home, embodying the principles of care, sustainability, and responsibility toward nature in her daily life. She believes that environmental consciousness begins at the individual level and grows through consistent personal action.
Dr. Swati Anand has been actively involved with multiple non-governmental organizations working in the environmental and sustainability space. Through these engagements, she supports awareness initiatives and encourages the integration of environmental values into education and community life.
As the President of Hombevu, she provides leadership, guidance, and strategic direction to the organization. Working closely with the Founder, Shylaja, Dr. Swati plays a key role in strengthening Hombevu’s mission to protect nature, promote sustainable living, and inspire community-driven environmental action.
